Bragança's main claim to fame lies in the Cidadela (Castelo de Bragança), virtually a separate village above the town and one with a distinctly medieval flavour. There are four particular sights here.

Can be accessed by car or climbing the staircase, with 686 steps, with several levels, each with a specific decoration. From the top there are beautiful views of the city and surroundings.

Strongly protected by the defence of the border with Galicia, by the Middle Ages Chaves became unprotected. It had to fortify itself, garrison the nearby hilltops, in order to keep them from being occupied by enemy artillery.

This is what remains of the 12th century Benedictine monastery, unmistakable by its head, with an apse in red brick. It is a rare example of "clay architecture", being an exception to northern granite architecture.

Praça Jorge Álvares

It is one of the most emblematic buildings in the city and is dedicated to São Miguel Arcanjo. Its construction dragged on for 400 years, and the mixture of styles made it a unique building.

An extensive green area on the east side of the Tâmega River between the Engenheiro Carmona Bridge and the Public Gardens that is open to the public. It has a playground, pedestrian and cycling paths, and a large grassy area.

The Torre do Galo, in Praça Jorge Álvares, is one of the most notable and unique examples of Portuguese military architecture. It is the only vestige of the old Castle of Freixo de Espada à Cinta, corresponding to the old Keep.
