• Do not drive into the Sassi — it's a ZTL and you will be fined; park in a garage in the modern town and leave the car there until departure.

• Cave hotels are the whole point but come with quirks — low ceilings, no lifts, and long luggage carries down stairs — so confirm exactly how far the porters walk before booking.

• The Sassi are nothing but stone steps and uneven cobbles; wear proper shoes and expect to climb constantly, especially brutal in July and August heat.

• Walk (or drive around) to the Murgia plateau across the gorge for the postcard view back at the Sassi, plus Neolithic cave dwellings where people lived 7,000 years ago.

• Come in April–May or October–November; summer is scorching and the Sassi are jammed midday, while early morning and dusk give you empty lanes and golden light on the tufa.

• Shops close for the afternoon pausa and good Sassi restaurants require booking—try crapiata (bean and grain soup) and peperoni cruschi, the crispy dried Lucanian peppers.
