Visit Teatro Antico at opening or late afternoon; the Etna-framed view is highly coveted, and massive cruise ship tour groups swamp the site during the middle of the day.
Isola Bella's beach is narrow, pebbly, and crowded. Bring water shoes, ride the cable car down to avoid parking chaos, and visit at first light or dusk to beat the crowds.
Escape the crowds by heading up to Castelmola, 5km and 500m above Taormina — a real working village with arguably better views and the almond-wine bar Turrisi.
Corso Umberto is beautiful but touristy; step into the steep side alleys or eat outside the main drag to avoid inflated prices for gelato and mediocre, tourist-trap menus.
Mazzarò beach, right next to Isola Bella and served by the same cable car, is generally less packed than Isola Bella itself.

Linea verde (the "Green Line") runs between Madonna della Rocca next to the castle at the top of town; down through the centre, main bus station, and Lumbi car park; on down to the foot of the cable-car at Mazzaro; then south along the coast past the railway…
