Toruń
Poland
Toruń (Kashubian: Torń, German: Thorn) is a beautiful, medieval city in North-Western Poland, situated on the Vistula River. Its architecture was not hit by bombs during World War II, and as such represents one of the few examples of true Gothic architecture in Poland.
AI insights
Local-ledAI-written from the Wikivoyage listings, transport section and mostly LOCAL creators' videos on this page
Prioritize the Old Town Hall tower climb for the best views of the city; while the museum exhibitions inside house a significant collection of Gothic art, be aware that many displays have limited English-language signage, making them more challenging to interpret for non-Polish speakers.
When choosing accommodation, verify the proximity of your hotel to local church bells; some central options are subject to hourly ringing throughout the night, and historic buildings with timber frames may lack soundproofing against nearby nightlife.
Follow the city walls to find the ceramic statues of historical figures and mythical creatures, which serve as an informal trail to help you spot architectural details you would otherwise miss while walking.
For a reliable dining experience, visit the Manekin restaurant located on the Old Market Square (Rynek Staromiejski) for their signature filled crêpes, but be prepared for a wait during peak hours; alternatively, seek out venues like Jan Olbracht that feature their own microbreweries to experience regional Polish cuisine.
Dedicate time to the gingerbread workshops held in an old granary, as this is a core part of the city's heritage and involves an interactive, guild-style process that is distinct from standard museum visits.

Getting around
Getting around
Toruń's Old Town is small. Torun's public transportation system does not enter the Old Town. Walking around is your best option. During summertime it is possible to hire a pedicab. Outside of the Old Town, there are plentiful buses and trams.
