Naples

Italy

Naples (Italian: Napoli; Neapolitan: Napule) in Italy is an ancient port on the Mediterranean sea. With just short of a million citizens, is the third most populous municipality.

AI insights

Tripest editorial research (YouTube travel guides, published guides)

  • Eat a proper Neapolitan pizza (Margherita or Marinara) at Da Michele, Sorbillo, or Di Matteo — the soft, foldable, slightly soggy center is the sign of the real thing.

  • Beat Da Michele's massive queues by grabbing a ticket during off-peak mid-morning or late afternoon lulls, or grab a cheap street-folded 'pizza a portafoglio' from Di Matteo's counter.

  • Walk Spaccanapoli — the dead-straight street splitting the old center — past Santa Chiara's cloister, Cappella Sansevero, and the nativity workshops of Via San Gregorio Armeno.

  • Book the 90-minute Napoli Sotterranea tour to descend through Greek tufa quarries, a Roman aqueduct, and WWII bomb shelters beneath the city.

  • Grab a shell-shaped ricotta sfogliatella from historic Pintauro, and drink your espresso standing at the bar, where local customs keep the price a fraction of the seated table rate.

  • Mind petty theft around Napoli Centrale and Piazza Garibaldi (especially at night), use a crossbody bag, skip renting a car, and ignore the touts pushing tourist menus.

How we vet these picks

Every pick is drawn from real sources — YouTube creators, Wikivoyage, and Wikipedia. We only surface sources that actually exist and that we've checked for authenticity — no filler, no dead-end searches.

Getting around

By public transportation on land

Naples' public transportation system is fairly difficult to understand for the first time visitor, since different lines are operated by different companies and sometimes interexchange is not allowed between different providers.

On foot

You will be surprised how easily you can get around by foot, too. Interesting spots are almost on every corner and most distances – especially in the (historic) centre – are small and can be walked in a matter of minutes.

By taxi

Taxis and the Metro are the quickest ways to see Naples. Taxis are the most expensive way, though. Before getting into a taxi, make sure it is licensed. Licensed taxis will have a city crest on the door and a taxi number. Also, make sure it has a meter.

By bike

Many streets – especially in the older parts of town – are made of cobblestones, (occasionally damaged) asphalt or a combination of both. Care should therefore be taken when riding a standard city bike.

By ferry and hydrofoil

There are several ferry and hydrofoil services that connect Naples and local ports and islands. Ferry and hydrofoil services leave from either marker type=go Metrò del Mare has several lines that connect Naples and Sapri; Bacoli and Salerno and Sorrento;…
